Agra Fort, located on the bank of Yamuna River and overlooking Taj Mahal (which is about 2.5km away), was first a fort and subsequently upgraded to a palace by Shah Jahan.
Ironically and sadly, Shah Jahan was later imprisoned by his son, Aurangzeb, in the palace. He could only look at Taj Mahal from his window, perhaps passionately, longingly and forlornly.

Imagine the pain that Shah Jahan had to endure?
For him, Taj Mahal ‘is so near yet so far’!
